Excerpts

The Making of a 'Pop Star'

In 1978, Michael played the role of a scarecrow in the fantasy movie The Wiz, which bombed at the box office. While working for the movie, Michael developed an acquaintance with the music director of the film, Quincy Jones (Jones)...

The Fall

During this tour in 1993, Michael was accused of child molestation for the first time. The accusation was made by a 13-year- old friend of his, Jordie Chandler. Michael cancelled his tour as police investigations were involved. As Michael ended the tour abruptly in November 1993, the firm promoting the tour filed a lawsuit for US$ 20 million. Marcel Avram (Avram), a European concert promoter who had been working with Michael since 1972, agreed to settle the lawsuit in return for rights to promote two charity and two profit concerts of Michael. The police investigations were dropped and the victim was offered US$ 20 million in 1994...

Off The Wall

Michael's behavior was sometimes bizarre. This was first noticed when he was shooting for the movie The Wiz during which he went home without removing the makeup he had on as a scarecrow - the part he played in the movie...

Bad Financial Management

Michael's lifetime earnings were put at more than US$ 700 million. During the 1980s, he was earning around US$ 50 million per annum...

Dangerous Future Ahead?

In June 2005, Michael was acquitted of all the child abuse charges against him.

However, there seemed to be no end to his problems. In 2003, when he missed making some payments to the Bank of America, it sold the loan to Fortress Investment Group (Fortress), which specialized in distressed debt.

Fortress immediately began charging a high rate of interest. It was estimated that Michael was paying about US$ 4.5 million (an interest of around 20%) on the US$ 270 million debt in 2005...
